Challenge #5: "Welcome to the Jungle"

I think we'll let this challenge be an indicator of our varied tastes in entertainment as well as fashion. :)

Challenge #5: Welcome to the Jungle
Design a look for your favorite female character from a television show.

The show can be currently on or cancelled, it doesn't matter.

And here are your questions for this week:

Please provide at least one photo example of your chosen character, illustrating her taste in fashion.
Tell us a bit about your chosen character. What does she do for a living? Who is she?
Where do you see your character going in this particular outfit?
What materials did you use for this challenge?

No one will be eliminated this week. However, if you do not compete, you will have to use one of your passes or, if you are out of passes, you will be eliminated.

Here is the complete list of designers. If you're not on here for whatever reason, or you wish to be taken off the list, please inform me before the deadline.

bottledglory - used one pass
calenfenwen - used one pass
ewenicorn - used one pass
horriblematzo - used two passes
oldsghoul - used no passes
rookie131 - used no passes
saxykwajgirl - used two passes

The winner of last week's challenge, rookie131, may choose to abstain from this week's challenge without using a pass. But I think this is a fun challenge, so who would want to? :)

You have until Tuesday at 10pm PST to complete your design. Good luck!

Results for Challenge #4

The winner for this challenge is rookie131! Congratulations, you now have immunity for the next challenge. This means that you may choose to abstain from next week's challenge without using a pass.

There was a tie between bottledglory and oldsghoul for lowest score. However, there is no elimination this week.

Here are some comments on the designs for this week's challenge.

bottledglory

"Kinda dowdy: looks an Olympic clean-out-the attic-uniform."

"The construction is very rough."

"The cardigan is a bit odd and does not represent the USA today. Maybe in the 50's? But the cuffed shorts are cute."

"Good color scheme, but the ensemble looks rather masculine."

sawykwajgirl

"Cute, very athletic, very feminine."

"This looks more like something you would wear for competition than for the opening ceremonies. I think the top was a flattering cut for athletes."

"I like the top very much, but I'm not crazy about the shorts. And it's a little casual for the opening ceremonies."

horriblematzo

"A little too masculine."

"I like the idea and it is well constructed."

"This look is adorable, flattering, and climate friendly."

"I like the color blocking on the top, but the design seems very masculine."

oldsghoul

"I don't think this looks appropriate for the opening ceremonies. Also, the cut wouldn't work for many of the women since they have many different body types."

"She looks a bit like Miss America, talent: tennis. I like that you used an olympian for your model."

"Very sporty, and I like the idea of silver and irridescent patterns, but the sash is very distracting."

calenfenwen

"Very nice idea. Looks comfortable and certainly nice enough for the opening ceremony."

"This simple dress is divine. I love that you picked a different country and used characters from their language that meant something."

"I like the use of the Chinese characters and the silhouette's adaptation from traditional garments."

rookie131

"Very neatly presented."

"I adore the white shirt with the red collar that neckline is really flattering. The pants are 'tailored' beautifully but not memorable. The jacket is smart but a little dated looking."

"I love this. Absolutely love it. It's sleek and sporty, and the lapel detail is very clever."

ewenicorn

"Really cute. feminine, tasteful, strong. Good use of color. Liked the big star on the lapel. Like the sash, not sure if it's a little too long or not, but generally, a really nice outfit."

"I like this a lot. The top is flattering and it is nice use of the colors. My only criticism is that the pocket seemed out of place."

"I love the silhouette that you chose but I am not a fan of the scarf belt or the pants pocket. Those look a little bit like what an older woman would wear to a fourth of july picnic."

"Great use of the national colors and symbol. The sash also has the potential to give the garment some movement."

Thanks for participating this week everyone!

Challenge #4 Entries

Here are the completed entries for challenge #4. Please respond to this post with your ratings. I will post selections anonymously.

Anyone who did not post this week is officially out. We are down to 7. Here is where we stand as far as passes go.

bottledglory - used one pass
calenfenwen - used one pass
ewenicorn - used one pass
horriblematzo - used two passes
oldsghoul - used no passes
rookie131 - used no passes
saxykwajgirl - used two passes

At the suggestions of some of our judges, I have decided to treat immunity as an extra pass, since immunity doesn't really count yet. Therefore, if you win this week, you may choose to skip next week's challenge without fear of getting kicked off and without using one of your passes.

Ratings are due by 12am PST Thursday. I will post the winner of this week's challenge at the same time that I post next week's challenge.

At a very good suggestion...

...I have extended the deadline for submissions to 10pm PST Tuesday rather than Monday. Challenges will overlap a little but maybe more people will have time to submit.

Challenge #4 - Entries

Please post your designs and answers for challenge #4 here. Comments are screened. Or, you can e-mail them to paperrunway@gmail.com.

Challenge #4: Rings of Glory

This challenge was pretty straightforward, so I'm keeping it that way!

Challenge #4: Rings of Glory
Design a look for your nation's Olympic team to sport during the opening ceremony.

If you want, you may choose to do a different country than the one you live in (since I think most of us are in the US).

And here are your questions for this week:

How do you think your look conveys athleticism and competition?
How do you think your look illustrates your county of choice's patriotism?
What materials did you use?

I will be making a post within the next few days where you can post your entries and answers whenever you are finished. The comments will be screened so only the poster and I will be able to see them. Alternatively, you may e-mail your design and question answers directly to me at paperrunway@gmail.com.

No one will be eliminated this week. However, if you do not compete, you will have to use one of your passes or, if you are out of passes, you will be eliminated.

Here is the complete list of designers. If you're not on here for whatever reason, or you wish to be taken off the list, please inform me before the deadline.

Results for Challenge #3

Sorry this is so late!

The winner for this challenge is oldsghoul! Congratulations, you now have immunity for the next challenge.

There was a tie between ewenicorn and rookie131 for lowest score. As a result, there will be no elimination.

Here is my final decision regarding elimination:

As it was pointed out, it is hardly fair to eliminate someone this week when there were only three people. Especially when any of those people could have used their passes and stayed safe. As a result, I have decided to convert passes into a "get out of jail free" card as well as a pass. From now on, you can either use your pass as an opportunity to skip a challenge OR as a free immunity if you would otherwise lose. If you have a pass and you lose, you will still be safe, but you will lose a pass. This is only good up to a certain point. Just like in Project Runway when immunity is taken away at a point, passes will be taken away here.

Since we have only nine designers left (and hopefully we won't lose any more), I have decided to not start eliminating until we have the same number of designers as the show has. The way I see it, everyone joined to have fun and design creative and beautiful looks, so it shouldn't matter too much if no one is eliminated for awhile. As a result, the first elimination challenge (provided no one else drops out) will be the show that airs on August 27th. This will allow us to have three designers for the final collection.

Thank you all for being so patient as I try to work out the kinks in this process (and change the rules a bunch at the same time, heh). Next season will run much more smoothly, and hopefully you will all be back!

Here are some comments on the designs for this week's challenge.

ewenicorn

"The construction is a little rough, but it certainly looks like it would fit in with the style in Florida. It would have been nice to see some of the color from the sunset, too."

"The design is a little simple, but I could see the inspiration photo reflected in the jeweled neckline."

"I think it is a cute idea, but I didn't get a Florida vibe at all."

"Very pretty and I can sorta see the inspiration. I think a different shade of blue closer to the ones in the picture would've been better"

"Cute with simple, clean lines."

"Liked this although the top looks a little "heavy" for the skirt material (top looks like felt)."

oldsghoul

"I'm usually not a fan of the asymetric look, but this works for me. The trash bag worked well for the jacket."

"I liked the idea of a dress/coat set, especially since the inspiration photograph is of winter snow. My score would have been higher, if I liked the shape of the dress better."

"I loved this look! I can definitely see a night out in cold weather. Very cute!"

"Very inovative and pretty. yet I don't particularly see the resemblance to the picture."

"A beautiful dress. Love the intellectual approach to weather conditions."

"Liked the dress but not really the coat. I think it would have looked better with stilettos instead of boots."

rookie131

"The outfit is cute, if a bit simple, but I adore the bag. I like the use of shiny materials as a reflection of the light in the inspiration photograph."

"Very cute. The bag is outstanding. The blouse confused me a little bit. When I first looked at the top, it seemed like the light pink was the inside of the blouse, and that if you were wearing it, it would be a v-neck. But the bottom has the light pink as well. If it were clothes, would you see the light pink on top and bottom while wearing? I didn't understand that."

"I love the bag. The outfit's a little simple for me, but I can really see the inspiration from the picture."

"I LOVED her bag, didn't like the outfit, but the presentation was great."

"Very cute. Love the handbag. My only issue is I see this more as an afternoon/professional look rather than evening."

"Loved the purse and top but not the skirt. Didn't seem to go together but I thought this one looked most like the photograph."

I'm really hoping no one else drops out. I know it is hard to make a commitment but I hope everyone else finds time to make an outfit a week and keep this game alive! It's been so much fun so far!

Here are the competitors that used passes this week:

aquidis
bottledglory
calenfenwen
cindersofrose
horriblematzo
saxykwajgirl

If you are not on this list and have not contributed this week, this means you are out. You used your two passes and thensome. This leaves us with nine competitors total.

This week will be our first elimination challenge. We will be eliminating every other week since our competitor list is so short.

Remember, ratings are due by 12am PST Wednesday.
